The Life is good® Story

In 1989 two brothers from Boston started designing tee shirts and hawking them in the streets. They bought a used van and called it "The Enterprise" in hopes of boldly going "where no tee shirt guys have gone before."

For five years Bert and John Jacobs traveled the East Coast selling door to door in college dorms. They collected some good stories but were not very prosperous. They lived on peanut butter & jelly, slept in their van, and showered when they could.

By August of 1994, with a combined sum of $78 in the bank, the brothers considered giving up on the ultimate road trip. And then they created Jake and he showed them the way.

Today, Jake and his trusty dog Rocket have become icons of optimism, and Life is good® - America’s little clothing company that could - spreading good vibes all over the world.

The Life is good Playmakers

Life is good Playmakers existed under a different name — Project Joy — from 1989 to 2009. This grassroots, Boston-based nonprofit was founded by Steven Gross, a pioneer in utilizing exuberant, joyful play to promote resiliency in children, and a leader in the field of psychological trauma response.

From the very beginning, support to carry out this vital work came from The Life is good Company, whose founders were inspired by Gross' work in their local area. Every year from 2004-2009, a Life is good Festival was held to benefit Project Joy. The more Life is good experienced this nonprofit's joyful approach and transformative impact on the lives of children, the more the company became wholeheartedly committed to advancing its work. Life is good signaled that commitment in early 2010 by officially joining forces. Project Joy became part of the Life is good Kids Foundation, under the new name of Life is good Playmakers, with a singular focus on carrying out the Foundation's mission to help kids overcome life-threatening challenges.

Life is good Festivals

At Life is good, we're on a mission to spread optimism globally. And nowhere is that optimism more contagious than at Life is good Festivals. These inspiring events, which are free to the public, spread good vibes by bringing communities together for good old-fashioned outdoor fun, games and live music.

The Festivals are for a larger purpose. A growing number of our nation's most vulnerable children need our help. We find creative ways to make a positive difference, raising funds on our morning Good Walk for Kids before each Festival and through the sales of fundraising tee shirts nationwide. With the help of thousands of volunteers, the generosity of big-hearted communities coast to coast, and great support from our corporate partners, Life is Good has raised over $3.6 million to date for the Life is good Kids Foundation, supporting exceptional charities that help children in need.
